About Parbatya Bouddha Mission (PBM)
Introduction
Parbatya Bouddha Mission (PBM) is a non-profit organization working
for the socio-economic, educational and cultural development of
the poor people in the Khagrachari Hill District of the Chittagong
Hill Tracts (CHT) of Bangladesh.
The CHT is situated in the southeastern corner of Bangladesh and
covers an area of approximately 5,093 square miles. The area differs
significantly from the rest of the country in its geography, inhabitants,
culture, and development. The region is hilly and the different
groups of indigenous people living there have a distinctive lifestyle
from Bengalis, the majority of the population of Bangladesh. The
government census of 1991, the most recent available, states that
a total of 974,445 people live in the CHT. 51% belong to various
ethnic indigenous communities and 49% are Bengali.
Since its establishment in 1983, PBM has been implementing programs
relating to income generation, healthcare, women's issues and education
that benefit the indigenous people in the Khagrachari Hill District.
